Cappadocia Red Tour or Green Tour — which one should you take?

What the Red Tour covers

The Red Tour stays in northern Cappadocia, where the rock formations are densest and the distances are short. It is the route most first-time visitors picture when they think of the region.

• Goreme Open Air Museum — a monastic settlement carved into the rock, with churches whose painted interiors survive. This is the UNESCO-listed centrepiece of the route.
• Pasabag (Monks Valley) — the multi-headed fairy chimneys, the most photographed formations in Cappadocia.
• Devrent Valley — no churches or dwellings here, just eroded rock that has taken on animal shapes. Often called Imagination Valley.
• Uchisar Castle — a rock outcrop honeycombed with rooms and tunnels, and the highest point in the region. The view from the top takes in the whole valley system.
• Avanos — a pottery town on the Kizilirmak, Turkey's longest river. The red clay here has been worked since Hittite times.

Because the stops sit close together, the Red Tour spends less of the day in the vehicle. Walking is limited to short stretches at each site.

What the Green Tour covers

The Green Tour goes south-west, further from Goreme. The landscape changes: fewer fairy chimneys, more canyon and open plateau.

• Derinkuyu Underground City — a multi-level city cut into soft rock, with ventilation shafts, living quarters and stone doors that sealed from the inside. Passages between levels are narrow and low in places.
• Ihlara Valley — a deep canyon along a river, with rock-cut churches along the path. The walk is the point here, not a viewpoint.
• Selime Monastery — a monastic complex carved into the cliff at the end of the valley. Reaching the upper chambers involves a short climb over uneven rock.
• Pigeon Valley — named for the dovecotes carved into the cliffs, once used to collect droppings as fertiliser for the vineyards.

Choosing between them

The two routes do not overlap. They cover different parts of the region, so neither replaces the other.

And the Blue Tour?

There is a third classic route. The Blue Tour heads south from Goreme, towards Mustafapasa — a village of old stone houses built by its former Greek community — and the Soganli valley, where rock-cut churches sit in a quieter setting than the ones at Goreme.

It is not a first-day choice. The Red Tour covers what most people came to see and the Green Tour covers the underground city; the Blue Tour is for visitors who have done both, or who would rather trade the famous sites for somewhere with fewer people in it.

How demanding is each one?

The Red Tour is the gentler of the two. Stops are short, the ground is mostly even, and you are rarely far from the vehicle.

The Green Tour asks more of you. The Ihlara Valley section is a proper walk along a river path, and Selime involves climbing over rock to reach the higher rooms. The descent into Derinkuyu passes through narrow, low passages — worth knowing in advance if enclosed spaces are difficult for you.

Can you do both in one day?

There is a combined route for visitors with a single day who want a taste of each. It takes the better-known stops from both and leaves out the rest. It is a compromise: you see more ground, but spend more of the day moving and less time at each stop.

If your schedule allows two days, doing the routes separately is the better experience.

Where the balloons fit in

Balloon flights are separate from both routes. They take off around sunrise and finish in the morning, which means a balloon flight and a full-day tour can share the same day. Most visitors who fly do it on their first morning, in case weather delays the flight and it has to move to the next day.
